Material — brown felt, dyed at the factory. Not cloth (without woven structure). Thickness about 1.5 mm.
The buttons have a good deep "stars" on face. They are made of yellow metal like the originals, the upper part is painted black. On the inside there is an simple marking: stars (***), no modern inscriptions like "super star", "strong" or "xiao myao". These buttons exclusive production of "Replika" shop! We also sell buttons separately and have wholesale price for them.
Aluminum peg (if present, depends on model) is riveted on an aluminum washer, with leather lining on both sides and with a piece of felt, so as not to scratch the flask. The loops of black leather (if present, depends on model) are sewn with black thread like originals were. Edges of the skin details are also painted black after cutting out. Leather liners (on the inside of the cover) are of natural (brown) colour.
There are the following types of covers in this batch (from 2017):
• for German 0.8 liter field bottle (standard model 1931, World War II);
• for German 1 liter field bottle, with reinforcements (jäger flask, with loops and peg);
• for German medical/sani flask (without loops and pegs, for the medical harness kit);
• for German 0.8 liter field bottle of the First World War (without loops, but with a peg).
How good the copy is?
Pieces of original covers for a German canteen over the cover made by us, Replika. The canteen is original, 0.8 l. Felt Type 1 — from a German cover of the late 1930s. It is 2.5 mm thick, very smooth and pleasant to the touch, gray-brown. Felt Type 2 — from a similar cover, but of 1943-44. It is thicker (3 mm), the particles in it are larger and of different colors, and the general gamma is yellow-brown.
The larger photo shows how close the color and texture of the Replika copy is to the originals. You can also clearly see the high-quality copy of the press-button with the original pattern, also produced exclusively by the Replika.
How to install the cover?
Covers are delivered flat, and at first glance seem small. They are not small: you need to wet the cover before installation and pull it on the flask. Felt is a supple material without a structure (that's why hats of various shapes is made of it), it can be molded into any flask shape. If there are folds, straighten them distributing the cover on the field bottle. If the folds cannot be straightened manually, you need to wrap the cover with a cloth tape to press the folds; Remove the tape after drying the cover.
We did not try to seat the cover with boiling water or hot water (because usually unnecessary). But it may help to shrink the cover and to avoid folds. When working with hot water, you need to take care of leather parts that may dry out or deform from heating.
