The Volkswagen project emerged from Hitler's speech in 1934 when he called for a car for the general public. The order for the development of the prototype was received by Ferdinand Porsche (the one who named the Porsche car brand), by then heading his own design bureau in Stuttgart. The name Porsche is pronounced with emphasis on the first syllable. The German automobile industry was not interested in creating a competitor, so Hitler commissioned the German Workers Front (DAF) to build the largest automobile plant in Europe. And the first car model was symbolically called KdF-Wagen (KdF = Kraft durch Freude = "power through joy", a community under the wing of the German Labor Front, which was engaged in organizing leisure for workers in order to achieve maximum productivity).
