Black shoulder straps with white edging and embroidery GD (Großdeutschland — "The Great Germany"). For soldiers (Schütze — "shooter") and corporals (Gefreiter) of the unit. Senior soldiers and corporals wore extra insignia on the left sleeve (above the elbow).

The regiment, and later the division, the tank corps "Great Germany" was an elite unit of the German army. The formation of the regiment took place in Grafenwöhr range, that exists and operates today.
Since the summer of 1941, the formation operated on the most difficult parts of the Eastern front and it received the nickname "fire brigade". It takes the second place among the land formations of the Third Reich by the number of knights of the Knight's Cross.
