The haversack model 1939 is a small rectangular backpack (soft, without a frame) with a tough back (for comfort of a soldier). The top is tightened with a cord and closed with a flap and strap. There are 2 pockets for toilet and gun accessories outside. Shoulder straps have front hooks to cling to the waist belt or pouches, and there's a back strap with a hook to cling to the waist belt. The left strap is integral, and the right strap can be unhooked to quickly drop the satchel.
The laundry and food were stored in the knapsack, a cooking pot and cape-tent were carried outside attached to special loops.
