A soviet helmet for WW2 reenactment. This is an original helmet from military stocks: model 1940, production of 1950-70-s. Canvas strap is sewn to a liner. The liner consists of 3 pads made of synthetic leather.

How to choose the size?

There were only 3 helmet sizes named "rost" (literally: height). The 1st was the smallest. How to determine your size if you're not an ortodox-reenactor and didn't browse the Red Army archives? If you have long and meager face and your head is under 23 inches (58 cm) in girth, then you should take size 1. If you're a big man with a large round face and your head in bigger than 23 inches (58 cm), then you should take size 3. If you haven't jumped yet — take size 2.

Each military stock box contains 30 helmets:
Size 1 — 15 pieces;
Size 2 — 14 pieces;
Size 3 — 1 piece only.

Therefore, the size 3 is rare and costs more. Sizes 1 and 2 are visually different in depth and diameter of the shell (the shell size 1 is narrower and deeper), size 3 is like 2 in diameter, but has different geometry of the occipital part. You don't feel the difference when it's on your head if you adjust the cord of the liner to your size.

Most helmets are like in the photo: new, without scratches. But they are stored in paper and in a special white powder (from mold, insects, etc.). We do not remove paper and the powder. Some helmets may be grazed (not to metal, just paint became lighter). This can be removed by wiping the helmet with any oil. We do not remove such scuffs, and they are not discards.

Some helmets have small scratches to the metal, oil stains, etc., which can not be removed without repainting. We offer such helmets with the discount of up to 150 RUB ($2) or a bonus (a gift, such as decal-star). We tell the buyer about all traits before shipping, so the buyer could make a decision.

Model SSh-40 (СШ-40, literraly: steel helmet 40) appeared as the follower of the SSh-39 and was the same dome (experts say that the shape of the dome became more round, but it is more likely because of the production technology than because of engineering solutions). New liner in the SSh-40 was composed of three leatherette (how it's common to say today "eco-leather") pads filled with a sort of hair. These sit on the metal brackets  attached to the helmet by six rivets. So the helmet called "six-riveted" (shesti-kljopka) unlike its predecessor, the model 1939 "three-riveted" (trjokh-kljopka). The innovation of the developers was that the liner pads could be removed (or at least the tie cord) and wear a helmet over the winter cap. Despite this advantage, the liner is considered uncomfortable: the helmet was not fixed on the head, and constantly had to be adjusted by hand when moving.

In 1968 a new model appeared. It had prolate dome (as an egg). Due to the fact that the helmet had the same color and almost the same form, some "patriots" often roaming in it at historical events... These same SSH-40 is already in short supply, the boom of liberation from their domestic warehouses is on the market more and more of SSH-68. And SSH-40 military production and is a collector's item and are valued more.
